The Cazenovia High School Music Department is pleased to announce that three students were selected for NY State Conference All-State Music Ensembles. The students rehearsed with esteemed conductors and other top student musicians from throughout New York State during the annual Winter Conference of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) held from November 29th – December 2nd, 2018 in Rochester, NY. Emma Wardell, a senior flutist, was selected for the Wind Ensemble.  Sophomore, Claire Edwards was selected for Women’s Choir. Senior, Ronan DeFanti was selected for Mixed Chorus. Emma is a member of Cazenovia’s High School Wind Ensemble Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Chorus. Claire is a member of the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Orchestra, and String Ensemble. Ronan participates in Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Concert Band. The All-State experience begins with a music teacher, his or her student, and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing a NYSSMA Level VI solo which must be selected from repertoire lists in the current NYS manual. Last spring, over 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state of New York prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected. The concerts were held in the magnificent “Eastman Theatre” (University of Rochester) which has been Rochester’s preeminent performance space since its opening in 1922. This historic space has hosted the world’s greatest musicians and conductors.

The Cazenovia Chamber Choir kicked off the 2018 concert series on November 8th with a joint performance at Solvay High School. Cazenovia singers joined their voices with members of the Solvay Chamber Choir under the direction of Christian Oliver. The evening started with the choirs providing separate performances, each with varied repertoire. The highlight of the evening was a combined number directed by guest conductor Dr. Jose Calvar from the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University. Dr. Calvar teaches conducting, choral literature and choral arranging as well as conducting several University choruses. The high school singers spent their day participating in workshops with Dr. Calvar working on various vocal and choral techniques before merging their groups and rehearsing the finale song, “ Hlohonolofasta”.

This is the second year these two choirs have shared a vocal experience. Last year the combined concert was held in the Cazenovia High School auditorium.

Members of the 2018- 2019 Cazenovia Chamber Choir are Angelo Annotto, Clari Atherlay, Annie Baldwin, Jon Benn, Betsy Chanatry, Emma Chesbrough, Ronan DeFanti, Claire Edwards, Nolan Frisbey, Skyler Grimes, Kyler Hathaway, Olivia Hodge, Kayla Karmis, Maddie Meigs, C.J.
