Cazenovia Central School District students recently participated in the CNY Steamboat Challenge, a STEM competition hosted by the MOST and Syracuse University.

For five weeks, fourth-graders Lauder Skidmore, Kiki Santiago, AnnaLee Duffy, Marissa Bock, Jenny Web, Sam Schofield and Greyson Fountain worked designing, building and testing steamboats.

Each team presents their miniature working steamboat, powered by a single tealight candle, on competition day. Judges score the project not only based on boat specification and race time, but on knowledge of the engineering process, teamwork and creativity/innovation.

The Burton Street Elementary students competed in teams with peers from across Central New York. Schofield and Fountain earned first prize in the grades four through six division.
