Cazenovia teachers dig into Common Core Standards for math
Submitted by Renee Burnett
Five teachers from all three Cazenovia Central Schools recently attended a conference in Syracuse to deepen their understanding of the state’s new Common Core Standards in mathematics.
The three-day workshop, presented March 1-3 at the DoubleTree hotel in Syracuse by the University of Arizona’s Institute of Math and Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES, included a keynote presentation by Bill McCallum, lead writer-creator of the Common Core math standards, as well as “grade band” (Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, etc.) break-out sessions.
The following Cazenovia teachers participated: Janet Britton (Burton Street Elementary); Brianne Tugaw (Cazenovia Middle School); and Kristen Axe, Kara Patrick and Lisa Senehi (Cazenovia High School).
On the conference’s final day, teachers from Cazenovia Middle School and Cazenovia High School were selected to present their work to the larger group as a culminating activity. Quite an honor.
