Cazenovia High School took first place in the 2013 sectional U.S. Academic Decathlon on Jan. 26 at Westhill High School in Syracuse. Six Central New York school districts participated in the daylong academic competition. The Cazenovia team – made up of members David Martellock, Robert Louis, Emma Dudley, Danielle Axelson, Kyle Polhamus, Riley Lloyd, Darren Mihaich, Schyler Rochelle, Gaevin Froio, Caden Boone, Brock Houghton, Remi Boissonnas and Joseph Mevec – won 23 individual medals in art, science, music, language and literature, economics and social science, according to faculty advisers Christie Brenneck and Martin Kelly. Cazenovia swept first place for individual trophies, with top prizes going to Darren Mihaich, Kyle Polhamus and Robert Louis. Danielle Axelson won a second place trophy, and David Martellock took home the third place award. Cazenovia also came in first in the Super Quiz oral relay competition. West Genesee and Liverpool high schools took home second and third place overall, respectively. Cazenovia and West Genesee high schools will now advance to the state competition March 15 and 16 at Onondaga Community College. The state winner will go on to the national competition April 25 to 27 in Minneapolis, Minn. An Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students, in which participants are tested in the areas of art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social studies and speech. The theme for the 2012-13 Academic Decathlon season is Russia.
