Last year, Cazenovia High School had 136 students enroll in AP courses and take a total of 243 exams. “As a school, our average scores are consistently higher than the New York state and global averages,” Cazenovia High School Principal Eric Schnabl said. “Last year, 80 percent of our total AP students scored a 3.0 or better, compared to 68 percent in New York and 61 overall.” As of last year, Cazenovia boasted:
  • 11 AP Scholars, with a 3.0 or higher on three of more AP exams taken (average 3.17 out of 5);
  • 11 AP Scholars with Honors, with a 3.25 or higher on all AP exams taken (average 3.7 out of 5); and
  • 12 AP Scholars with Distinction, with an average of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken (average 4.17 out of 5).
“This achievement is the culmination of countless hours of hard work on the part of our teachers and students. They’ve given us all something to be proud of,” Superintendent of Schools Robert S. Dubik said. Achieving both of these goals – increased access to and success with AP material – is the ideal scenario for a district’s AP program because it indicates the district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit most from rigorous AP course work. More than 90 percent of colleges and universities across the U.S. offer college credit, advanced placement or both for a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam — which can potentially save students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition.
