On October 5, 2018, Mrs. Claudia Johnson and Mr. Kyle Martin traveled with the Regent’s Earth Science classes at the High School to Herkimer Diamond Mines as part of the Mineral and Rock Unit. This trip has been a long tradition that many Cazenovia Earth Science students have taken part in over the years. Herkimer is the site where beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals are found that are close to 500 million years old. Unfortunately, Herkimer Diamond Mines experienced a fire in the fall of last year that completely destroyed the gift shop and museum. Since then, a new education center, cafe and gift shop have been built and the Herkimer staff did a great job of explaining the geology of the area and how to find Herkimer Diamonds. Thank you to Mrs. Hagan, Mr. Reilly, Mrs. Hudson and all the chaperones, bus drivers and cafeteria workers for supporting this field trip that is so popular and educational!
