by Mr. Ronald Luteran, High School Math Teacher Josie Chiarello, a Senior at Cazenovia High School, was recently awarded the “Shirley Hockett Scholarship for the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computer Sciences” from Ithaca College. This scholarship was named after Shirley Hockett, a professor emerita who taught mathematics at Ithaca College from 1966 to 1991 and will provide Josie with an annual stipend of $15,000 per year at the college. Professor Hockett was an amazing teacher and I was lucky enough to not only have her as teacher, but I was her teaching assistant for two years while I attended Ithaca College in the late 70’s. Professor Hockett was an early contributor to the AP Calculus Exam and authored the Baron’s Review book for AP Calculus. I still use many techniques I learned from her to this day while teaching my own section of AP Calculus. When Josie informed me she had received the scholarship I couldn’t have been happier and I know Josie will live up to the high standards that Professor Hockett set for all of us. I would like to offer my congratulations to both Josie, and her family, for this wonderful accomplishment.
