Preliminary Testing Results for Lead Testing in School Water
November 8, 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Following the discovery of high levels of lead in water at local schools and nationwide, the Cazenovia Central School District performed some preliminary testing to ensure our systems were at safe levels. All of these initial samples came back with amounts well below the accepted standards. In September, the state mandated testing of all potential sources within the school buildings. The District has collected samples from all of the potable (drinkable) taps and has received test results for the Burton St. Elementary School. Of the 108 taps tested, only four samples exceeded the maximum contaminant level of 15 parts per billion (ppb). Other than the areas identified below, all other areas fell well within the limits for acceptable drinking water:
Three bay sink (Left) faucet, BS Kitchen 18.3 ppb
Room 13, Lower level classroom sink 30.2 ppb
Room 37, classroom sink 37.2 ppb
Room 39, classroom sink 18.9 ppb
In addition, a few outlets tested near the maximum 15 ppb and as a precaution the District will be treating these in the same manner as those outlets exceeding the standard:
Room 5, Upper level classroom sink 13.7 ppb
Room 13, Upper level classroom sink 13.2 ppb
Room 44, Lower level classroom sink 14.8 ppb
The District has posted signage and/or closed these outlets as appropriate pending replacement or repair. Once repairs are completed, each of these outlets will be re-tested and results will be updated on our website.
Overall, we are very pleased with these testing results. Additional test results for the Middle and High Schools are expected from the testing lab in the coming weeks. These results will be posted to our website and any issues will be reported to you in our next communication. Please feel free to contact Matt Erwin, Director of Facilities by e-mail: merwin@caz.cnyric.org or by mail: 31 Emory Ave, Cazenovia, NY 13035 with any questions.
Sincerely,
Matthew Reilly, Superintendent
