April 14, 2021 – Update from the Cazenovia Board of Education
We wanted to provide the Cazenovia Central School District community an update on the process for finding our next Superintendent of Schools. All of the applications are in and Dr. Cook, our search consultant, has begun screening each of the candidates. All of the focus groups are completed and the data gathered from these focus groups will be very helpful in giving the Board of Education the feedback necessary to determine the qualities most important in hiring our next Superintendent. We are also using that data and some of your suggestions in crafting the questions we will be asking in the various rounds of interviews. After screening interviews are complete, the whole BOE will interview the top candidates toward the end of April, narrowing it down to a few finalist candidates with an announcement about the end of the process by mid-May.
We thank you for your understanding and all of the feedback that you have provided as we continue to work hard on your behalf.
March 26, 2021 – Update from the Cazenovia Board of Education
The Board of Education at Cazenovia Central wants to provide our community with an update on the hiring process for our next Superintendent of Schools. We are wrapping up focus groups with staff, students and parents this week. There have been multiple focus groups comprising students, parents, teachers and staff as well as the administrative team. These focus groups were designed to help the board get clarity on some of the questions and issues raised in the survey that we released early in the process. The feedback from the survey and clarification we received from the focus groups has been extremely helpful. We will use this information to help our candidate profile and to form the questions we will be asking in the interview process.
Dr. Matt Cook, the OCM BOCES District Superintendent who is facilitating the search process, has already begun to have screening interviews with prospective candidates. Applications are to be postmarked no later than March 26, 2021, so all the candidates will be in by early next week. The confidential interview process we decided to pursue is designed to allow for the deepest pool of candidates, which is especially important as there are several other openings in the region at this time. We have been pursuing an aggressive timeline so that we can see as many candidates as possible, while still targeting a July 1, 2021 start date for our next Superintendent.
Over the next few weeks, we will be finalizing the interview questions, based on survey and focus group feedback. Dr. Cook will finish screening all prospective candidates. The Board of Education will meet with candidates for the interview process in April and our goal is to finalize the process and make an appointment in May, which will allow for a July 1 start. We thank you for your interest and we share your desire to make sure that the students, staff and community of Cazenovia Central is able to hire the best possible person to continue to move our district forward.
February 17, 2021 – Update from the Cazenovia Board of Education
A Board of Education has a collective, explicit responsibility to hire and evaluate the superintendent of schools, which is taken very seriously in order to maintain educational excellence.
Board members met with Matt Cook, EdD, District Superintendent of Schools, Sole Supervisory District of Onondaga – Cortland – Madison Counties, and enlisted OCM BOCES consulting services to assist in the superintendent search.
Open vs. Confidential Search
The Board has carefully weighed the option of conducting an open versus a confidential search. With an open search, three finalists are interviewed by committees comprised of representatives from the community, parents, students, and staff. In a confidential search, the Board seeks stakeholder input with regard to characteristics and qualifications for the next superintendent and then works to ensure confidentiality of the candidates while taking into account input received through a survey and focus groups. The Board would like to ensure that the search draws a deep pool of highly qualified candidates and understands that confidentiality may be critical for successful candidates who do not want to jeopardize their current positions. After careful deliberation, the Board selected the option to hold a confidential search. The Board feels it is critical to obtain input including desired qualifications, skills, and experiences of the next superintendent from students, parents/guardians, district staff, and the community. There were 579 responses to the recent survey, and this high participation is greatly appreciated. In addition, the search consultant and Board members will meet with stakeholder focus groups in the coming weeks. More information about those meetings will be forthcoming.
