The impact of student council to shape the future
Nov. 20, 2024
The Student Council isn’t just a club; it’s a training ground for future leaders. By participating in this organization, students gain invaluable experience that can shape their futures. With promotional campaigns and in-person voting, students outside the club can experience the woes and excitement of a real-life election. This year, after a full ballot of candidates the votes are in, completing the Cazenovia Middle School’s second year of student council elections.
One of the student council’s most significant benefits is its role in simulating real-world elections. Students learn the importance of campaigning, public speaking, and persuasive communication.
Student council begins in middle school and offers electoral representative positions to grade 5 and 6 and leadership positions to grade 6 and 7.
Grade 5 teachers, Ms. Cleary and Mrs. Slocum, who started the student council last year, remembered their love of creating student-to-student connections through clubs at school. Ms. Cleary explained that for the students to run for election, they needed to create their own videos and posters. They also needed to follow the guidelines for promotion, which included being supportive and respectful of other candidates, as smear campaigns were not permitted.
“I didn’t know what to do for my video, so my dad said do something funny like the count from Sesame Street,” said Sam S., Student Council Treasurer. “I didn’t connect with that and thought neither would other students, so I went the superhero route.”
Sam, who is now in grade 7, was also inspired by a candidate’s video last year and thought it important to include talents and interests about himself that would make him a good fit for treasurer, such as his love of math and participation in STEM.
Student council elections also help students understand the power of a single vote and the democratic process firsthand. This hands-on experience prepares them for future civic engagement, whether voting in local elections or running for office.
“It was also about keeping momentum and putting in as much effort as possible,” said Sam.
Beyond elections, the student council fosters leadership skills. Students learn to collaborate with peers, delegate tasks, and solve problems. They also develop strong organizational and time management skills, which are essential for success in both academic and professional settings.
“My sister encouraged me to run,” said Grade 7 Landon M., Student Council President. “She thought it would be something I would like. I’m organized, not like having a clean room, but I’m enjoying creating events like the upcoming winter carnival”.
Moreover, the student council instills a sense of community service and responsibility. Students participate in various initiatives, from organizing charity drives to planning school events. This exposure to community involvement inspires them to become active citizens and positively impact their surroundings.
“By joining the student council, students not only enhance their academic and social lives but also lay the foundation for a bright future,” says Cazenovia Middle School Principal Amy Getman-Herringshaw. “They emerge as well-rounded individuals, equipped with the skills and values needed to become responsible citizens and effective leaders.”
